Â鶹Íø will be hosting summer workshops for adult students in the community with cognitive disabilities through the Friendship Fields Academy. During the month of June, three separate three-day sessions will take place for students 18 years or older. The format will include options for morning and afternoon workshops over a three-day time span.
The program will be directed by Valerie Wall, a Â鶹Íø adjunct professor and a special education instructor in the Wichita Public School District. Wall has directed the Friendship Fields program at Â鶹Íø since 2014.
Local educators and business representatives, including professors and coaches from Â鶹Íø, teachers from USD 259, and specialists from local businesses (such as Eric Fisher Academy, Botanica and Stampin’ Up), will provide the sessions to the students.
During Session I (June 5-7), students will learn about making greeting cards or the arts in the mornings and microwave cooking or makeup/hairstyling in the afternoons.
Session II (June 8-10) will feature a basketball camp in the mornings with dance or social media sessions in the afternoons.
In Session III (June 12-14), students may choose first aid, photography or gardening in the mornings and either sign language or computer skills in the afternoons.
